CHAN YIN CHAI, 21, unmarried woman of Shek Sz Tau Village, Ha Pun Yu.
So.
My father is dead my mother in Hong Kong. In 1924 I went to Canton to work (when I was 18) as chu nin mui working for various persons. Last year I had been back to the country and went to Canton in the 3rd moon. I stayed in Shin Wu Street with my uncle. I stayed 2 days and then got work in the Southern Suburbs opposite the Theatre with a man and his wife. A few days later I moved to Chong Hau Street with my employer. A fortnight after that I became sick. My master Yeung gave me some medicine which made me unconscious. Previously his friend had seduced me. I was then taken on board a ship (probably at Pak Ngo Tam). I was stupefied and made no objection. The ship was called "Sam Hung". I was told A man "Pui Shuk" a travelling trader looked after me, a man of 30 odd. He said I had been mortgaged. When I objected he threatened me saying, "You will be put into the "Po Leung Kuk" and made to wash out the latrine and be beaten❞. The ship put in first at Bangkok and we went ashore. He took me to Annam Lane where there are brothels. He took me to a house next door to a brothel where I was shut up for 2 days. On the 19th of the IVth moon I was taken by Pui Shuk's wife to Singapore by train. When I got to Singapore I was taken to Fan Tsai Mei to a traffickers house and sold to a brothel keeper. She said if I told the truth I should be put in the Po Leung Kuk and never get out. If I said what I was told I should finish my indentures in 3 years. Otherwise she would get me into trouble. I said what I had been told to say and was put into a brothel. Later I found out the truth and I got a man to write to my mother. The patrons of the brothel are Hainanese and it was some time before a Cantonese came in and I got him to write.

"A woman called TANG YUK took me to Vancouver. I was then 15. After I got there she produced Wong Shai Kwan. She told me I must marry him or pay $1,000. In fact he imported me as his wife, and made a declaration to the customs to that effect. There was no ceremony
Less than a month later he made me take a post as waitress in a restaurant. I earned $25 gold a week and tips, and with this money I supported my self as well as Wong Shai Kwan and his wife..
My three children are all his".
Statement of WONG SHAI KWAN, 40 years (12.6.26).
"I have been in Vancouver since I was 17. I made one trip to China to be married and then returned to Vancouver. A little over 6 years ago TANG YUK brought WONG YUT WA to Vancouver. She was to come in as the wife of a man called LAM but TANG YUK sent me a wireless to say that some mistake had been made and to ask me to help her out. I had a friend in the customs and I paid $500 poll tax for her. Then TANG YUK persuaded me to marry her. She cost me in all $1,300, so I thought I would let her earn money for a few years before sending her back to China. She worked as a waitress, and later had a post in a fantan house
My principal wife is in China".
